Another KSBK Alumus has Died........Famed Talk Show Host, ART BELL has passed away. Art passed away at his home in Nevada.Art was "One of America's Best-Known Talk Show Hosts". At one time his overnight program had over 500 Radio Outlets carrying his Show.ART BELL was probably the Best-Known Alumni of KSBK. He always appreciated Doug Greene for giving him his first Commercial Radio job. During his tenure of the "COAST TO COAST" Radio Show,(A program he started) he had Ratings as high as Larry King. In fact,King had him on his CNN TV Show. ART was one of those "one of a kind" Broadcasters that will go in history as America's Best Radio Personalities. May you Rest in Peace..........And as Bob Hope would say, "Thanks For The Memories"! Our thoughts are with his Family,and Friends.
JIM WILSON has passed away, in Texas. Jim died on May 5th/2015, of a Heart Attack. Jim was one of the mainstays of the Station. He worked a Daily Show on both KSBK, and was at JORO, during the closure of the Station, with Bob Wales .Following his years at KSBK/JORO, Jim became Program Director for a Station in Puerto Rico. Then moved to Texas where he did Voice-Overs. A Personal Note...... Jim was a Radio Genious! His "Side Stories, and Mini-Dramas". were Masterful. I'll remember him as a very sound Professional. May You Rest In Peace.

From the mid-60's to 1972, Doug was the Program Director of KSBK. He was not at the Station, when KSBK became JORO. Many of the names listed below were hired by Doug,during his management tenure. He was a great guy----and you could always come to him, with any ideas that could make you a better Radio person. May you Rest in Peace.

On August 19,2014, KSBK Broadcaster, JOHN ALLEN passed away in Florida. John, whose real name was Alan Hickey retired from Radio, in 2009. After leaving KSBK, using the name, Al Merideth, for many years was featured on WCBS-FM, in New York,City. May You now "Rest In Peace". Our thoughts go out to his Family, and Friends.
And....... On Dec. 30,2016, "SKIN N' BONES",BOB JONES , passed away. Details are limited. When more info is released, we will let you know. "SKINS", as we called him, was one of the funniest guys, On-The- Air. He was a full time fill-in guy. If you were sick, or couldn't make your Air Shift, in 1970------It was SKIN N' BONES who worked for you. Now, You can Rest In Peace. Our thoughts go out to his Family, and Friends.

History buffs would probably list Jay Neely, as the FIRST Program Director.Followed by Dave Lock, Kiyoshi Kabira, Oscar Luria,Doug Greene, then Bob Wales.
The station had it's share of Characters/Personalities. Probably the best-known of all was ART BELL. As many of you know, he has become one of America's top talk-show hosts It was during a late-night show that people started to call-in to him saying that there were some strange-looking individuals loitering around the Naha docks. Aliens you ask? That started the ball rolling for his theme show "Coast To Coast". Along the way---other Disc Jockeys were heard over Okinawa. BOB WALES just checked in.......Bob was our leader. KSBK/JORO wouldn't have had the success it did, without his leadership. His show, at 9:am, ("Opinion Line") was by far the most listened to program on Okinawa. To many of you listeners----Bob's voice was featured on many of the local sponsors' Ads. (These were shared by others like Jim Wilson, and "Skip" Willis) "Thanks" Bob for being a part of the blog.(Ok...now hit the Beaches in Hawaii. Or go Boating in Incline Village.....you deserve it!) AND,checking in: EARL BARNESS. Some of you might remember him as "BART" BARNESS.
NEWS FLASH!......Former KSBK/JORO Alumnus SKIP WILLIS has Retired, from day-to-day broadcasting. He spent the last years at WVBO, in Oshkosh,WI. Like his shows on Okinawa....he had a very highly rated morning program in WI. Good Luck in your retirement years! Radio has always in his blood......He's On-the-Air on a part time basis in his new hometown in Florida.
ANOTHER NEWS FLASH!.....Just heard from JAY NEELY. Jay was the first Program Director.And, was at the station during Bill Conine's leadership. Jay also had his own Show.He is completely Retired from Broadcasting. It was great speaking with him. He certainly was one of the original guys that made KSBK what it was......a true Broadcasting legend in the Far East.
STILL ANOTHER NEWS FLASH.....Just heard from "Bubble Head" Ed. Ed was one of the most talented guys KSBK ever had. And......very funny! I'll bring you more stories from Ed, as the days go by. It was great hearing from "Bubble Head". Thanks Ed for being a part of the Blog. You are one of the people that made KSBK Numero Uno!
NOT ANOTHER NEWS FLASH!......YES!.........The Blog just heard from BOB KENT. Bob was the All-Night Guy. he was telling me that after KSBK, he workd in a couple Commercial Stations in the U.S.. His big break came when he joined VOA......Yes, the Voice Of America, in Washington DC. As one of the Engineering Managers, he oversaw those Saturday Afternoon Broadcast of President Ronald Reagan. He lives in Florida, and runs a World-War Two Museum. All of us at KSBK are proud of ya!

I remember Mr.Wales doing the Opinion line Show. I was attached to the Transportation Division at Naha. The show would take calls from frustrated drivers,when they used to have those Parades/Demostrations. And the show, was a great venting situation for those of us in the military.

ReplyDeleteMilitary really didn't comment on anything regarding KSBK/JORO. However, some of the DJ's that were on the Station---also were in the Military.So, Most of the Company Commanders, enjoyed the fact that one of the guys they worked with in the Military, were also heard
on the Radio.

The only one that could have that, would be someone at the main headquarters of RBC/Okinawa, that could locate personell records. However, as you can see, that as this Blog goes on--more names are added as we find out!

Jeez... just found this blog. Such great memories of Okinawa. Sorry to hear Doug Greene has passed. I worked the Midnite shift at KSBK 880 AM from 1969-1970 when the board was upgraded from the old Gates knob & switch panel to that gorgeous back-lighted slide & button beauty that made you feel like you were on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. "Bubblehead Ed" introduced me to Doug and was instrumental in getting me that full time gig(my daytime job was an air traffic controller at Kadena AB). Bob Wales was my 6 AM relief, one helluva broadcaster and all around good guy. I caught up with him by email not long ago. He's a successful lawyer spending summers at Lake Tahoe and wintering in Hawaii. Bravo, Bob! Cleve Miller worked weekends back in '69 as well as doing his regular weekday stint at AFRTS. He and I used to monitor each other's show through the old giant patch boards of that era and one night actually coordinated a 5 minute swap of our on-air programs, AFRTS on KSBK's frequency and vice versa. Boy, did that light up the phones! Not long afterward I also played Tommy - The Rock Opera,by The Who, completely uninterrupted and commercial free and claimed myself as the first-ever AM jock to do so while having absolutely no idea if it was true! It couldn't have been too memorable to anyone other than me since I missed making the Honor Roll of KSBK alumni. LOL! No matter... The 18 months I spent on "The Rock" and my time at KSBK were without a doubt the best of my life.
ReplyDeleteAfter going back stateside I worked in print journalism for the Dow Jones-Ottaway News Service in New York, then broadcast news director for WSEV/WMYU-Knoxville then on to morning drive air talent for WNOX AM/FM and several years as broadcast journalism instructor at the Professional Academy of Broadcasting. Now retired in Florida raising and training western pleasure horses.

This is a shot in the dark but my father, Gunnar Tuxen, was stationed (USAF) in Okinawa twice in the 1960's. Bob Wales and my dad were best of friends during both tours in Okinawa. My dad would regale my brothers and I with stories of them playing "Snoopy and the Red Baron" with their respective small aircraft in and around the Ryukyu Islands. I recently came across some reel to reel tape of Bob's shows on KSBK and would love to reach out to Mr. Wales if it is convenient. Thanks for your time.

As I recall, Bubblehead Ed would sign his show off with Duane Eddy's "Because They're Young", a nice 2 minute instrumental to end his show. I was stationed with the 3rd batillion, 12th Marines, 3rd MAR Div.
ReplyDeletewow, what a great blog..I worked at KSBK/JORO radio for about 6 months in early 1972..I only worked one day a week, Sunday morning and into the afternoon, maybe a four hour shift..don't really expect anyone to remember me, but it was great fun..I remember Skip Willis, Jim Wilson, and the Porcupine..I was a Marine and I got an early out for college so I left on the fly..glad all you alumni saw fit to post all these great memories..I went by my real name, Mike Wilson, which was stupid because we already had Jim Wilson there..anyway, great to read all this..by the way, I went on to be a cop in Los Angeles and retired a few years back..take care, all..

ReplyDeleteWow! Just recently discovered this blog and the memories are flowing! I had the pleasure to be on the air at KSBK in 1968 and 1969 using the air-name John Allen. My "day job" was C-130 aircraft maintenance specialist for the U.S. Air Force at Naha Air Base. There is not enough space here for the stories I can tell from those days (John will be adding a few to this site soon), but I am honored to have shared the airwaves with some of the most talented radio folks around, and to bring some of the "hometown sound" to our service men and women during such a difficult time. After my return to "the world" I began a career at Long Island's WGLI and then WBLI. In 1980, I joined New York City's premier Oldies Station-WCBS-FM using the air-name Al Meredith, eventually becoming news and public affairs director and anchor. I retired from broadcasting in 2008 after a fantastic career and now enjoy the sunshine of Florida with my wife of 45 years, Susan, who also joined me on Okinawa during my KSBK tenure..

Mushi Mushi...Just saw a PBS special about Bob Fass of KWBAI Radio NYC, and got to reminiscing about my days in Okinawa in the early 70's and decided to google JORO Radio....Thanks to Bob Wales, I landed the evening shift as DJ for a short but very rewarding stint at the Hilton Den Discotheque. (He did the dinner shift). It was a great job! If you remember, it was a live remote show with live half-time entertainment...the fabulous "Salt and Pepper"dancers. Talk about diversity! The white military guys would come in by themselves, in T-shirts and jeans, drink hard alcohol and request ROCK music....while the black guys would arrive in groups of five, all dapper, dressed to the hilt in their custom solid-colored bell-bottom suits (with hats and coats to match) requesting SOUL music. They came with their oriental ladies (and their own bottle of booze) and danced themselves into a frenzy. And then there were the Japanese businessmen registering at the front desk...they reminded one of a small group of penguins...looking all alike in their little black business suits and white shirts and ties....it was definitely an interesting mix of cultures. I think a highlight for me was the Jane Fonda show in a bull ring....and of course, the late great James Brown! (one stage and three bleachers!) What a performance! Remember Ernesto Barba? Let's see, I also recorded some commercials for NOW...and was priveleged to interview Yogi H.A, Rao on the air. We did alot of snorkeling, parasailing, motorcyling, boating, and the Far-East Concerts. Those were some good years...lot's of good memories! Aloha and thanks to Bob Wales! First off I must apologize to all the listeners for requesting the song "Ding, Dong, the Witch is Dead" so many times on KSBK for those of you that endured it. It was nice having "connections," lol. I consider Okinawa my hometown and have so many fond memories of it, and the KSBK/JORO days, even though I was a kid. I recognize many of the names....Marty, remember the Suzuki 90 motorcycle you guys gave (or sold) me/us? I think it came from you. I had sooo much fun riding around the back roads and the sugar cane fields. I remember your exotic tempura, like pineapple..I remember parasailing, Ernesto Barba, the Hilton, and there are so many familiar names on this blog! It was a wonderful time. I also remember the James Brown concert. I remember waiting for like an hour after the show with Dad to meet him backstage-- he took a whole shower, changed clothes and did his hair all over again before coming out to meet fans. I live in Japan now, and have been back to Okinawa a few times. It's changed so much and there are only a few places I remember that are still there, but it's still got that laid-back feel and is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteCecy, I ran into your dad parasailing at Kadena Circle seawall. You'll remember there was a large, flat dirt lot between the wall and the street. Your dad, and probably you!, were getting pulled around by a car on that lot. We surfed right off the middle of the seawall that we called "Redmon's Reef" because the nice rights there were spotted by a fellow GI named Redmon.

ReplyDeleteThanks for your remembrance of Jim Wilson. My wife and I had the pleasure of working with Jim the latter part of his career before his retirement. We became such good friends he moved with us to Corpus Christi and had a really wonderful last few years. We were priviledged to hear many of the wonderful stories and memories he shared from the station on Okinawa. Our hearts will miss him, but we will always have our memories as will you. FYI, it was one of his greatest joys to come back into contact with all of you. God Bless and thank you once again for remembering him.

ReplyDeleteJohn, this is Mike Mandel, one of the KSBK announcers in the 1950s & 60s. My brother discovered your blog and passed it on. It's been fun catching up on how KSBK evolved after I left the Rock.
ReplyDeleteI left some of my memories in the "Stories" section of this blog, but I want to let you know that when I started at KSBK in 1957 when RBC was in Shuri, the station manager was Kiyoshi Kabira and the program manager was Oscar Luria. Oscar was still the PM in 1960 when I left for college. Also, Kay Taggart was an announcer during that period.
Thanks for the effort you've put into preserving the very unique history of KSBK. You deserve a medal, and thanks for the memories.

KSBK had a sister TV Station, but the on-air talent were 99% Okinawans Besides AFRTS, there was a Religious Broadcaster (Call letters I can't recall) that might have been her Station......Maybe someone out here might remember that Station. I know their Broadcast building was at Michinato's side Gate. Good Luck! And, Sorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteThat other English language station was KSAB/JOFF an FEBC outlet. 1020 AM. Lasted until 1976. We may not have listened to it as much as KSBK but then again that service was there for us as well. Would like to see a t-shirt design for that station as well since I have two from KSBK/JORO...

This company is totally un-afilliated with KSBK/JORO, or RBC.They seem to be just capitalizing on the popularity of KSBK/JORO.

I spoke with Jay a little over 4 years ago personally. I am thinking he was at KSBK around the Mid to Late 50s. Jay was also one of the Station's Managers at that time, besides having his own music show
It seems they let just anybody run the board at JORO in 1972. I was 19 and an air freight guy at Kadena and Skip Willis kind of stepped in it one afternoon. He introduced a young lady as the station's "guest DJ" and let her introduce a few songs. I wanted to be the next guest DJ!! So I called Skip and he reluctantly had me down to the station and gave me an audition in that little studio off the main one. I did alright and was given a 15-minute slot. It started to dawn on me that there wasn't really a guest DJ thing going on...good old Skip! One of the fill-in guys was on vacation and they had me back for a handful of 3-hour, midnight to 0300 stints for free. I would have paid them! I went under the name John Dillon. I have a couple of them recorded on reel-to-reel. Heads up to Bob Wales who famously had Jane Fonda on his morning show when she was on her way to Hanoi. She told us GIs to just drop our guns and walk away. Bob scored bigtime. "And now, Big 8's weather, just ahead of much more music..."

ReplyDeleteThose days as JORO were crazy! I remembered that time Fonda made those comments. I even made National News, in the U.S!

Bubble Head Ed Erickson recently passed away in Akron, Ohio on June 19, 2023 from Dementia and Parkinson's disease. He had just turned 76 on the 14th. - Jr.
